The song of the fire-born
"The fire is coming," he whispers,
"Be ready to dance through the flames."
Oh Lord, I am ready!
This life I've built for myself is dry and brittle
and aches for your fiery kiss to set it ablaze.
Burn it all down. I am ready.
I will hold onto nothing but you
and together we will dance in the ashes.
And if you ask I will immolate myself on the pyre of your love
and sing your praises as I burn for you.
Oh, what joy to burn for you!
I do not fear the pain,
for no lasting transformation comes without it.
And if the flames should destroy me, what then?
You have destroyed me before
and remade me, closer to your image.
That is all I ask my Lord.
I am ready.
Bring the flames that will purify me
and provide the substance of my rebirth.
And when the fire has eaten my face
I will see with the eyes of my heart.
And when my heart has been consumed,
then I will be set free.
And in that moment I will rise from the ashes,
reborn like the bennu,
a creature of fire with wings of flame.
